Whether you are doing great things or atrocious things for your health, you are constantly shifting in one direction or the other. You have self care habits that you participate in everyday. If you feel like changing for the better is overwhelming, look at the following and see if you can start with just one of the following 5 elements each month for the next 5 months. As hard as it is, if you keep coming back to these SIMPLE basics, it can be less overwhelming and more likely to result in lasting LONG TERM benefits. SHIFT! Sleep Most people don’t get enough. Figure out how much makes you feel great and then try to adjust your schedule to get that amount most nights. Habit of movement Insert 5 minutes of movement into each hour of your day. Sitting is a silent killer. Intentional interactions Spend time with people who light you up. Limit time with people who drag you down. Know the difference. With Gratitude for the late Dr. AJ Rice MD
If you never had the privilege of knowing Dr. A.J. Rice, I am quite sorry for you. He was an icon of the Central Valley medical community. This is my story of him, and it might not be 100% accurate, so maybe his daughter, Leigh, will chime in if there are flaws in my tale. It's been three years since I spoke at his funeral, and I miss him often! Dr. Andrew Joel Rice was born in Pittsburgh, PA (coincidentally, about 45 min from my home town) to a stay at home mom and a busy pharmacist. He and his brother worked in his father's pharmacy from a young age and they knew the city block well, but they knew the customers of the pharmacy even better. I remember a picture that I saw of him in high school in which he strongly resembled Buddy Holly, very clean cut. He was a strong student and his parents raised him with to work hard, and pursue a career that would be respectable and keep him financially stable. He studied pharmacy for his undergraduate degree and then went on to Medical School … [Read more...] about With Gratitude for the late Dr. AJ Rice MD
Trauma scars go deep
In my office I hear the most amazing stories. I am often humbled, amazed, inspired, and awed by my clients' lives. Everyone has a story and some are much easier to hear than others. It is hard for me when I hear stories of trauma or abuse on any level, but I am often amazed by our human ability to overcome and be incredibly strong and independent citizens even after horrific tales in our past. A good majority of clients end up in my office after having tried many other modalities of both eastern and western medicine and I am consistently impressed by the amount of mental and emotional healing I see with Homeopathy even when more standard practices (medications or therapy) have failed. An old wound of mine has recently been reopened by a case that is currently unfolding in my community. It has been challenging, but I am aware that I am continuing to learn and grow because of it. I have my own children now and perhaps that is why this is hitting home in a new way, but it has also … [Read more...] about Trauma scars go deep
L.O.V.E. longer by L.O.V.E.ing yourself
This is the month of LOVE! We all have many people that we love and we all tend to spend a lot of time and energy on loving others, but sometimes we need to take a step back and remember to L.O.V.E. ourselves. We can love others much more effectively and deeper if we are taking good care and loving ourselves. The new mom is always a great example of how we will give and do anything for that sweet little newborn baby often to the point of collapse! I see this play out with so many of my friends and clients to a lesser degree at different stages of life. We only have so much LOVE to go around and if you don't focus on yourself first, you are most likely short changing those you love. Four tips to help you LOVE longer: 1. LAUGH often. 2. OPEN your heart to yourself. 3. Vitalize with VEGETABLES! 4. Energize with EXERCISE! Let's start with LAUGH often. It all starts with having a real community, not just a social media community. Getting out and enjoying time with friends and … [Read more...] about L.O.V.E. longer by L.O.V.E.ing yourself
The MEASLES shouldn’t make you FEAR your NEIGHBOR.
Vaccinations. It is fitting that in the weeks that I decide to start a blog, vaccines are on the front page, above the fold. While I normally try to stay below the fold, I know it would be cowardly of me not to address this topic right now. Let's start at my beginning: in fifth grade I did a book report on Edward Jenner and was fascinated by the theory behind immunization. I thought it was genius, it worked beautifully, and I was a firm believer from the age of 10! I was in 5th grade in 1986, and I was completely immunized from 7 different diseases having had a total of 10 injections by the age of 5. A lot has changed in 30 years. By the time a child is 5, if he or she has kept with the recommended schedule of immunizations, they will have been immunized from twice the amount of diseases with potentially (depending on combination immunizations) more than 30 injections. I'd like us all to take a big deep breath when talking about and thinking about immunizations. Thankfully, we do … [Read more...] about The MEASLES shouldn’t make you FEAR your NEIGHBOR.
